Guide's Tip of the Month

Practical preparation advice from our team, shared monthly to help participants get ready for outdoor programs.

Layering for Variable Mountain Weather

Virginia highland trails can shift from warm valleys to cool ridge lines within a single hour. Pack a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a wind-resistant outer shell. Avoid cotton for extended hikes, as it retains moisture and can lead to discomfort during elevation changes.

Bring a compact rain cover for your pack even on clear forecast days. Ridge weather patterns are unpredictable, and a lightweight shell adds minimal weight while providing useful protection.
